THE SCROLL
ACCORDING TO C-09-00
8-26-00
The adventure begins.
After a year and a half, registration began at 8:30 A.M. Over 50
plus anxious and eager Scouters registered, thus making it the largest
Wood Badge course to be held at Camp Warren-Levis. Activities began
at 10:00 A.M. with Knife and Axe - no casualties. Patrol assignments
were given with the best being assigned to “the BEARS.” Lunch was
served and then introductions were made. By the way - why is there
only 1 BEAR on staff? We proceeded to Gilwell under the guidance
of the SPL where we had the opening flag raising ceremony and underwent
our first uniform inspection. To no ones surprise - everyone failed!!
At this point the Bear patrol was entrusted with a set of really big wooden
beads. We also received the sacred scroll to record our memoirs.
After this we were treated to a tour of Staff Village where the highlight
was the water jug. We then received our campsite assignments via
compass directions, and upon arriving we started setting up our campsite.
Our coach counselor- Joyce then presented us a course on communication.
With our grub runners returning with our food supplies, we successfully
cooked our supper and awaited for our guests to arrive to eat with us.
Our evening session on “What are and How to use resources” was then presented.
The first PLC meeting was held. All patrols then assembled at the
amphitheater for the campfire presented by the staff. Cracker-barrel
hosted by staff members was held at the main lodge. Our refreshments
were a sampling of our Trails End Popcorn. After a time of fellowship
all patrols dispersed to their campsites for the night. End of Day!
HOT, HOT, HOT; RAIN, RAIN, RAIN.

Day two of the C-09-00 Wood
Badge adventure began with an early morning downpour. After a filling
patrol breakfast, Troop 1 assembled at Gilwell for flag raising.
Following in the footsteps of the Buffalo patrol (and carefully watching
their step), the Bobwhite patrol arrived fashionable late. The recorded
activities of the previous day were read from the sacred scroll by the
program patrol. Although entertaining, the material presented was
barely bearable. Upon completion of the assembly, Troop 1 proceeded
to the BP Lodge for informative sessions on Firebuilding by Mike Cobbel
and cooking by Dave Brock. We were then treated to a ‘Dave Brock’
special campfire lunch. After lunch, a session on camp games and
campfire programs was led by Pat Neff and Theresa McMurray. The entire
troop was pleased with a brief visit to the pool for some Wood Badge cooling
down time. After a final patrol session, we sat in on a PLC and watched
our Patrol Leaders in action. During this PLC, a menu was planned
for the final C-09-00 Wood Badge Feast. A final patrol meeting was
held in each campsite prior to our departure to our respective nests.
The Wood Badge experience was
picked up again when Troop 1 returned on Friday, Sept. 8. A campfire
program was presented by the Eagle Patrol. A great time was had by
all. Before retiring to our campsites, Scoutmaster Norm Brown reviewed
the ticket process.

Day 3 of the C-09-00 Wood Badge
course began with the best weather yet. The oppressive heat and rain
from the previous weekend took a break. After a nice flag raising
ceremony, the SPL asked the Patrol Leaders from the various patrols to
inspect their individual patrols and then report their findings.
At the point, the program went down quicker than the Titanic. Since
most of the patrols did not follow the sterling example of the BIG DAWG
FOX PATROL and Eager Antelopes Patrol in getting their patrol names approved
in the first weekend. The next hour in Gilwell Lea was LONG!
Many of the patrols begin asking the SPL and our beloved Scoutmaster to
approve their patrol names and flags. The new Patrol names include
the : Traditional WB Beavers, Burly Blind Bears, the Bodacious BAADDD Bobwhites,
Regal Golden Eagles, Bright-eyed Owls, and the Magnificent Roaming Buffaloes.
We witnessed the most obnoxious display of kissing up in the 81 year history
of Gilwell Lea. Because of this display Troop 1 learned a new cheer
which was named the “Boot Shake” cheer because it was gettin’ deep.
Training included Jr. Ldr. Training, Reflection and Planning for Success.
We also learned about rope splicing and knot tying and lashing. We
were given a task to build a Super SPL Splasher. A good time was
had by all. The SPL led an informative presentation on Low Impact
Camping to prepare us for our overnight campout next session. The
highlight of this session was a surprise visit by Tommy Tenderfoot.
Tommy was equipped for low impact camping like those certain special people
in our troops are - you know the one - they bring EVERYTHING. The
last session discussed Controlling the group. The Wood Badge staff
put on a BIG DAWG Fox excellent skit. Patrol campfire and Cracker
Barrel followed. Respectfully submitted and Foxually

The Eager Antelope patrol assumed
the awesome duty of Program Patrol at Gilwell Lea on Sunday morning.
Following the usual procedure of Patrol Reports, weather, and sports announcements
... Troop 1 honored the memory of Wood Badge Scouters who have gone on
to greater rewards. Patrol and Troop pictures were taken for posterity.
An interfaith church service was hosted by the EAGER Antelopes at Baden-Powell
Lodge. This was immediately followed by a class on Evaluating.
This was followed by a simple but nourishing lunch at the camp sites.
We then repaired to Pioneer Field, where we were instructed in the fine
art of Orienteering or “How not to get lost in the woods”. We then
returned to BP Hall for an informative class on Effective teaching.
SPL Bill Mattatall lead the troop on a tour of the patrol sites.
Following the tour the patrols were dismissed with instructions to work
on “Tickets”. The tickets would be reviewed the following weekend.
Troop 1 reassembled at Baden-Powell Hall on Friday evening, 22 September
2000. We received a lesson on Styles of Leadership, held a mock troop
meeting. During the meeting we were taught how to treat first aid
problems from snake bites to a stick in an eye. We went outside for
patrol competition to demonstrate one of the first aid skills. The
Competition presented its own set of problems where first aide could be
saved for knowledge and use. A late night session presentation on
Issues: Tenure, Values, and Delivering the Promise. Scoutmaster
Norm presented an empassioned plea for the safe return of his best buddy
- Bob White Bear. Cracker barrel was held and tickets were reviewed.
After a night rest breakfast was served. The Eager Antelopes served
egg omelets in their campsite along with Costa Rican Peaberry coffee. Everything
was great. Ask the Scoutmaster.

The beginning of our time as
program patrol saw the approving of the patrol flags of the Traditional
WB Beavers, Regal Golden Eagles (finally), Big Dawg Fox, Bright Eyed Owls,
Burly Blind Bears and the Bodacious BAADDD Bobwhites. Since the beginning
of Wood Badge C-09-00, the camp staff scrutinized each WB candidate.
After much deliberation, BBBW David Lee Hammers was presented “THE AWARD.”
We started our tenure as program
patrol by presentation of 12 live Bobwhites to course C-09-00 representing
the six Bobwhite staff , the six Bobwhite patrol members, and the 12 years
of the Wood Badge Courses. We were dismissed from Gilwell Lea.
Next on the agenda was a session on Nature and Conservation that gave us
many questions to ponder and a nature collage to assemble.
Lunch was served consisting
of “Sloppy Joe’s”, fresh cut veggies, and fruit. Also cheese was
added to the menu to cut down on the digging on the coming overniter!
Packs were next readied and
weighed then left on porch at the lodge. Next came the “Adventure
Trail”, a series of games of skill performed by the patrols under the leadership
of the patrol leaders. Many strange things - “A Spitting Spider”
and Killer Bees, Toxic Waste Dump, and blindfold feats of skill were seen
and in most cases accomplished.
Patrols then proceeded to the
lodge for gear, grub, and final instructions for independent patrol overnight
hikes. Compass bearings were followed for discovery of wonderful
campsites. Tents were pitched, and a meal of unusual flavor was prepared
and consumed. Required paperwork was accomplished, patrol campfires/evening
programs were held, permanent patrol leaders were elected.
Lights out. Then the rains came. TENTS LEAKED! Morning
arrived and a breakfast of cereal, grainola bars, and hot drinks was served
in the rain.
Patrols broke camp and reported
to Gilwell Lea in full uniform.

was awarded the First Aid Award for her care of Troop 1.

Final entry! Troop 1 was
formed after a short delay while the Traditional WB Beavers arrived late.
Reports of the glorious camping adventure was given by the PLS. Most
trips were completed directly. The Bodacious BAADDD Bobwhites noted
some problems in orienteering. Some hikes were extensive. The
Groping Eloping Antelope stew armed the body & soul of each patrol
member. All patrols commented about the punctual turning on of the
air conditioning @ 8 P.M. & the opportunity to shower all night during
our low impact camping experience. OF note -“The Award Winner” disappointed
the Troop when he arrived without his award. Bruce Voorhees was awarded
the YDSS certificate. The Regal Golden Eagles tried to “suck up”
to Scoutmaster Norman Brown by giving him a “canvas” purse to carry his
Woodbadge book. (Later he was given a complimentary lipstick & polish
to help him get in touch with his feminine side.) The staff flag
was finally presented & approved by the Troop 1. Patrols announced
their permanent PL: Eager Antelopes-John Bell, Traditional WB Beavers-Alan
Gerstenecker, Bodacious BAADDD Bobwhites-David Anderson, Regal Golden Eagles-Jeff
Sexton, Big Dawg Foxes uhh-Jules King, Bright Eyed Owls-Roger Dettenmeier,
Burly Blind Bears-Charles Thompson, Magnificent Roaming Buffalo-Sandy Kleinik.
We retired to B-P Lodge for a session on Counseling. OF note, we
learned to Listen, Listen, Listen, & don’t forget to hear. We
traveled to our campsites for a nutritious delicious COLD lunch.
After lunch we returned to B-P lodge for a summary of skills. Norm
Brown had to start even though the SPL was not present. You could
tell he was relieved to know that Bob White Bear had returned. Alas,
his shovel was missing. DCFS was to be notified that the bear had
been kidnapped & not left food & H2O overnight. Our Scoutmaster
noted that Bob White Bear was depressed & in need of counseling.
Norm Brown noted the follow-up session for
C-09-00 Troop 1 will meet January 27, 2001 @ 2 P.M. @ the Edwardsville
LDS Church. Thanks to “The Award” winner for clarifying our meeting
was @ 2 P.M. instead of 2 A.M. Ticket items were reviewed & we
returned to camp to shower & prepare for the feast. Guests gathered
& shared with kindred animal spirits. The meal was preceded by
bead presentation to 4 guests. Everyone ate their fill, and there
was even enough for the staff even though they ate last. Course Directors
from this & other Councils were introduced. Everyone introduced
themselves, Patrols performed their yells and songs.
The future is Now!
Happy Ticketing!
